The Growing Importance of IoT in the Oil and Gas Industry

CIOAdvisor Apac | Tuesday, October 12, 2021
Tweet

In the oil and gas industry, IoT allows remote monitoring, which eliminates the need for employees to go on-site and do frequent manual inspections.

FREMONT, CA: The oil and gas business is a high-tech, asset-heavy industry. In this sector, malfunctions, wrong measurements, and even minor errors lead to huge damages and, in some cases, disastrous catastrophes.

The advancement of IoT for the oil and gas sector aids in the resolution of various difficulties in this field, such as reducing costly downtime, increasing efficiency and safety on the premises, and improving performance at each stage of production.

Modern technology has the enormous capability for not only solving problems but also improving performance in this industry. One technique that draws the greatest attention and investment is using IoT innovation in the oil and gas business.

When it comes to constant data monitoring and analysis, the Internet of Things is inherently the first technology that comes to mind. IoT applications in the oil and gas sector for system monitoring, administration, and remote control make a significant difference in this regard.

Innovation in Oil and Gas Industry

Smart algorithms

Data and events recorded and sensed by various sensors are cross-referenced and analysed by smart algorithms. They generate valuable insights that assist management in making critical decisions, such as when to begin and stop drilling to prevent problems.

Predictive and preventive maintenance

Smart algorithms can forecast when the circumstances of expensive equipment change, requiring routine or emergency maintenance. It should go without saying that on-demand maintenance is more effective than regular inspection and ensures worker safety.

Wearables

In this industry, wearables have already increased efficiency and even saved lives. Sensor-based suits, wristbands, smart glasses, and helmets enable continuous monitoring of the circumstances of employees performing dangerous activities, seamless communication with the base, and even augmenting workers' abilities by offering appropriate advice, notification, and warnings.

Drones and robots

Drones and robots are critical IoT devices in the oil and gas supply chain. They allow for rapid site investigation, ongoing data collection, 3D mapping of landfills, and even the ability to survive the harsh circumstances seen at drill sites.
